Summer Camp

Applicant: 14th Andover (Stockbridge) Scout Group
Award: £750
Field: Education, Culture
Support for: workshop fees and materials
Project:
The 14th Andover Scout Group run themed summer camps every year and in 2019 planned a camp with a Japanese theme.
The cub pack (girls and boys aged 8-11) who, living in a rural part of Hampshire, had never been exposed to Japanese culture were given the opportunity to try taiko drumming, taste Japanese food and sweets and learn simple Japanese words and phrases and songs to sing around the campfire.
A number of workshops were planned including shibori and weaving, along with a samurai armour making workshop run by a cub scout leader who had recently returned from 2 years in Japan where he worked with a cub pack in Nagoya.
The planned activities helped to build the foundations of a relationship between the Japan and UK groups who would go on to be linked up as penpals.
