
The Japan Youth Collective is back with an exciting new programme for 2025-2026
Love Japan? Want to meet new people and be part of something exciting? The Japan Youth Collective is your chance to explore, connect, and create! This unique, Japan-focused youth programme is for 16-19 year olds who are passionate about Japan. Over 8 months, members will work closely with The Japan Society to discover more about Japan, meet new people, and learn valuable skills.
Run by The Japan Society, the 2025-2026 Programme is funded by the Japan House London Trust and co-hosted at Japan House London.

What is the Japan Youth Collective?
The Japan Youth Collective is a vibrant space for young people to connect, discover, and explore their passion for all things Japan, while gaining valuable skills for the future. Best of all, the programme’s activities are completely free of charge!
As a member, you’ll meet new friends, engage with and learn from Japan-related professionals, and take part in unique hands-on experiences. Whether you’re passionate about anime, history, language, or considering a future in Japanese Studies or a Japan-related career, the Collective is the perfect space to shape your interests and knowledge while deepening your connection with Japanese culture.

Who is the Japan Youth Collective for?
The Japan Youth Collective is all about creating opportunities for young people who are passionate about Japan but might not have the chance to explore it fully. We want to bring together young people eager to learn and explore Japan in a supportive, engaging environment.
We're looking for members who:
- Are 16-19 years old and live in London or near the Greater London area
- Have a passion for Japan and a strong curiosity to explore more
- Have limited opportunities to learn about Japan on their own
One of the Collective's core aims is to open up Japan-related activities to a wider audience, so we will special considerations will be given to applicants who don't have alternative opportunities to learn about Japan.

What's Involved?
The programme schedule kicks off with a 3-day, 2-night, residential orientation in August 2025, followed by regular fortnightly in-person meet-ups, with optional online and in-person activities, until the end of March 2026. In these sessions, members will dive into different aspects of Japan, develop practical skills, and engage with experts, all while immersing themselves in Japanese culture. Throughout the 8-month programme, members will collaborate with The Japan Society, along with professionals and cultural experts in Japan-related fields, leading up to a programme finale!
The programme is structured as follows:
- Orientation and Month 1: Identify the Collective's key areas of interest in Japan
- Month 2–6: Explore these topics and gain new insights as a group
- Month 7 –8: Prepare for the programme finale
Each month, there will be two meet-ups: one Collective Catch-up and one Japan Lab. Members will also have tasks to document their journey and practice their new skills. For more details about what the Collective will be doing and the programme, see our FAQ.

No prior experience studying Japan or the Japanese language is required—just enthusiasm and a willingness to learn!
One of the Collective’s key aims is to reach young people who may not otherwise have access to Japan-related learning (for example, those who can’t study Japanese at school or take private lessons). If you're curious about Japan but haven’t had many opportunities to explore it, this programme is for you!
Collective members will work together with the Japan Society and professionals and cultural experts in Japan-related fields over a period of 8 months and end with a final event or showcase decided by the Collective!
The 2025-2026 programme begins with a 3-day, 2-night residential orientation from Tuesday 5 to Thursday 7 August 2025. After, the collective will meet up regularly twice a month after that. See the tentative schedule below for an overview of the programme.

3-Day, 2-Night Residential Orientation (Tuesday 5 - Thursday 7 August 2025)
All the members of the collective will take part in a fun residential orientation programme just outside of London. During this time, members will get to know each other and get an introduction to the project and some cultural activities and topics.

Collective Catch-ups (Once a month)
A regular meeting once a month, the Collective Catch-Up will take place on a Friday evening from 5 -7pm (may be subject to slight change).Collective Catch-ups are a space for meetings, brainstorming and planning, and short skills-based sessions.

Japan Labs (Once a month)
Japan Labs take place once a month on a Saturday afternoon from 1- 5 pm(may be subject to slight change). It’s a practical chance to explore aspects of Japanese culture that the Collective is interested in.

Tasks
Throughout the programme, Collective members will complete tasks to document their experience and practise their new skills. These include: producing content to share their experience on the Japan Society website; co-leading short activities in a pair or small group; giving feedback at key points during the programme. -
Programme Finale (Date TBD)
The Collective will be working towards a final event or showcase to share what they've been doing and inspire others.

Regular sessions will take place in central London at The Japan Society and Japan House London. Occasionally, there may be visits to other venues across London for special activities, such as private viewings, exclusive workshops, and more.
Yes! All transport costs to and from in-person meetings and activities will be covered for participants.
- Meals & Snack - Meals will be provided during the 3-day, 2-night residential orientation, and snacks will be available during evening and weekend meetings.
- Materials & Equipment - Everything needed for workshops and activities will be provided free-of-charge
Participants will be reimbursed after attending, so you’ll need to cover upfront costs. If this is a concern or you’re unable to pay in advance, please contact us at education@japansociety.org.uk. We'll be happy to discuss alternative arrangements.
Yes—if you are selected, we expect you to attend all sessions. This programme is fully funded, with all costs covered, so it’s important that places go to those who are committed to making the most of this opportunity.
That said, we understand that emergencies or unavoidable commitments may come up. If you know in advance that you will need to miss a session, you must inform us as soon as possible.
Mandatory Attendance:
- You must attend the 3-day, 2-night residential orientation at the start of the programmer love for Japan.
- You must be able to attend the majority of the meetings and activities throughout the 8 months.
Sessions take a lot of planning, and spaces are limited. If you’re unsure whether you can fully commit, please consider whether this is the right time for you to apply.
After the application deadline on 11 June 2025, we will begin reviewing all applications and shortlisting candidates in mid June. If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to attend a short, informal interview via Zoom or telephone. These interviews will take place near the end of June or the beginning of July, giving us a chance to get to know you a little better, and for you to ask any questions you might have.
We aim to inform applicants whether they have been shortlisted for an interview by the end of June 2025. If your application is shortlisted, we will also contact your reference to confirm your suitability for the programme.
