As part of an ongoing series of high school taster sessions for children from primary schools in the local area, Newport Girls’ High School invited a group of 30 students to visit for a day of Japanese culture.
With the help of Japanese teacher, Mrs Fujii, who runs a weekly Japanese club for students at the school, a range of activities like origami, sushi making and sports games were organised with specialist teachers being brought in to help facilitate.
The children enjoyed learning how to sit and bow and greet one another correctly and were fascinated to learn about Japanese school PE lessons and Sports Day games as well as everyday routines.

Japanese Calligraphy Workshop
A calligraphy workshop for students to learn more about writing Japanese characters, led by a specialist.

The annual Foyle Obon Festival welcomed the Hannari Japanese Dance group and Japanese storyteller, Masako Carey to the lineup, engaging audience members of all ages.
