Japanese Matsuri in Glasgow

Applicant: Japanese Matsuri for Glasgow
Award: £500
Field: Culture
Project:
‘Japan Matsuri for Glasgow’, run by a group of both Japanese and Scottish volunteers, organise regular festivals for members of the local community to celebrate Japanese culture in an inclusive way.
During these free to attend events, visitors tried origami and wrote their name in Japanese, learnt about Japanese fairytales, watched taiko performances, sampled Japanese sweets and tried furoshiki and wearing kimono.
An additional element this year were pupils from a local Japanese Club and the Japanese Class at Daiwa Sports, South Lanarkshire, who joined the events to share their interests and knowledge of Japanese culture with visitors.
The two festivals were a great success with many in attendance and created a unique atmosphere for strangers to get together and share new experiences of Japanese traditions.
